intelliflow shut off valveLeaking water is one of the most damaging occurrences that can happen to a home. Horror stories about water leaks are kind of like urban legends, everyone has heard them, but hope they never experience one.

Damages caused by leaking water range from very minor to almost Titanic level disasters. If you have a small leak under the bathroom sink that you discover in a day or two, you may have to replace a couple extra rolls of toilet paper that you store in the vanity. However, damage would be extensive if you returned from a long weekend of water skiing at Roosevelt Lake to discover that thirty minutes after you left home a hose to your washing machine broke and has been spraying water full blast for the last three days. Even if you have very good homeowner’s insurance, you will not escape all of the costs involved in a major water leak like drywall repairs, carpet restoration, tile or wood flooring replacement, cabinet and furniture repairs or replacement and mold and mildew abatement, and the list goes on.

There are now solutions to this nightmare situation, so let your mind rest easy. The first step would be to upgrade plastic water supply line or rubber hoses at all water using fixtures or appliances with much more reliable braided stainless steel water supplies or hoses. In addition, automatic water shut off valves and/or alarm systems have been developed for most water using fixtures.

Automatic Alarms by Honeywell
For customers that want an alarm without shutoff valves, Honeywell makes two battery powered alarms.

The Water Lean Alarm, RWD21, is a spot detector that can be placed anywhere that a leak may occur. When activated, the alarm will sound for up to 24 hours and is reusable simply by drying the alarm and it will be ready to use again.

The Water Defense Alarm, RWD41, has a 4 ft. leak detector cable that can be secured to any location where a leak may occur. With the leak detector cable secured at a location, it is not as likely to be accidentally moved from its intended location which can be a problem with a spot detector. The leak detector cable is attached to a 6 ft. leader connection cable which plugs into the alarm box. This allows for flexibility in the location of the alarm. Both of these alarms are strictly battery operated.
